Bernhard was known internationally as an expert in the fields of Bioenergy and Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry. Bernhard Schlamadinger was Research Director of Climate Strategies, an academic network organisation focused on developing and delivering research to meet the needs of international climate change policymaking. He is also co-founder of TerraCarbon LLC, a company that provides consulting and transaction advisory services on forestry carbon projects.

Bernhard was known internationally as an expert in the fields of Bioenergy and Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry. Bernhard was a coordinating lead author of several reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and served as a subject expert for the UNFCCC, International Energy Agency, FAO and the World Bank. He co-authored the first approved CDM A/R methodology and PDD of the first registered forestry projects under the Kyoto Protocol.

Earning his PhD from Graz University of Technology in Austria, Bernhard was formerly engaged at Joanneum Research (a state-owned Austrian R&D firm) from 1992 to 2007 where he served as senior scientist and head of the group "Energy, Land Use and Climate Change". An expert in the area of greenhouse gas mitigation, Bernhard developed the GORCAM carbon accounting model and has worked extensively on climate policy issues.
